# EU Consumer Guarantee Information (Notice & GARAN)

## Overview

From **27 September 2026**, EU rules ([Directive - EU - 2024/825 - EN - EUR-Lex](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/dir/2024/825/oj)) require online traders selling goods to EEA consumers (EU + Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) to provide clearer information about **legal guarantee rights** and, for qualifying products, a **producer commercial guarantee of durability** (free, covering the whole product, lasting **more than two years**).

The regulation requires this information in **two places**:

1. **On your EEA-facing website** — the harmonised legal guarantee notice as a **prominent reminder** on the storefront; for qualifying products, the **GARAN label** before purchase (for example on the **product page / PDP**).
2. **In the order confirmation email** — on a **durable medium** (for example, an attached PDF), so the shopper receives the harmonised notice and any qualifying GARAN labels after they buy.

From **27 September 2026**, where **Global-e sends** the order confirmation email, Global-e meets the **confirmation-email** part of the regulation on qualifying EEA goods orders (by shipping address). We attach the following on a **durable medium** (PDF):

* **Harmonised legal guarantee notice** — official English Commission artwork. Attached **by default**; contact your CSM to **disable** harmonised notice attachment on confirmation emails.
* **GARAN label** — when GARAN attachment is **enabled** for your account (contact CSM) and you have supplied a valid `GaranImageURL` per relevant line item (your PNG, converted to PDF).<br />No URL for a line item = no GARAN attachment for that item.

Global-e will add a link to the harmonised notice on **Terms of Sale (TOS)** for all platforms (inc. Shopify).

<Note>
  **Important:** Steps **1–2** and **Sections A–B** below apply where **Global-e sends** the order confirmation email.

  **Shopify merchants:** Global-e does **not** send that email — Shopify does. See [**Shopify merchants**](/eu-consumer-guarantee-notice-and-garan#shopify-merchants) for full implementation guidance.
</Note>

## Who needs to do what

| Responsibility | Who |
| - | - |
| Harmonised notice on your **website** (prominent reminder) | **Merchant** — we **highly recommend** prominent on-site placement even though Global-e adds a link in TOS |
| Link to harmonised notice in **Terms of Sale (TOS)** | **Global-e** — will add a link to the harmonised notice on Terms of Sale (TOS) for all platforms (inc. Shopify) |
| Create the **GARAN** for every **relevant product** (see [GARAN file requirements (PNG)](/eu-consumer-guarantee-notice-and-garan#garan-file-requirements-png)) | **Merchant** |
| **GARAN** on your website before purchase (for example on the **product page / PDP**) where the product qualifies | **Merchant** |
| Providing a valid link (GaranImageURL) to an English GARAN per relevant product\* | **Merchant** |
| Harmonised notice + GARAN in **confirmation email** (durable medium) | **Global-e** — **Harmonised notice:** attached by default on qualifying GE-sent emails (disable via CSM).<br />**GARAN:** enable via CSM; per line item when a valid `GaranImageURL` is supplied. |
| Enabling GARAN attachment on confirmation emails | **Merchant** — contact CSM |
| Disabling harmonised notice attachment on confirmation emails (optional) | **Merchant** — if you don't want the notice to be sent, disable it by contacting CSM |

\* **Relevant product (for GARAN data):** a product where the producer offers a **free** commercial guarantee of durability that covers the **whole product** and lasts **more than 2 years**. You do not need to send GARAN data for products that do not qualify.

**GARAN in the confirmation email:** If functionality was enabled, for each line item, **if you have supplied a valid** `GaranImageURL`, we attach the GARAN. Products without a URL are sent without a GARAN attachment for that item only.

## Official artwork — examples

Use the **official Commission** assets. Do not redesign. [Commission download pack](https://commission.europa.eu/publications/practical-guidelines-and-high-resolution-vector-files-eu-notice-and-label-product-guarantees_en).

### Harmonised notice (English)

Global-e attaches this artwork on every qualifying confirmation email **by default from 27 September 2026**, unless harmonised notice attachment is disabled for your account.

</Frame>

### GARAN label — filled example

Illustrative only (use the template as is and update years · brand · model per product).
brand and model should be written in English.
You must supply your own finished **PNG** at `GaranImageURL` for each qualifying product.

<Frame>
  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/globale-nce/d9pqyMmulLMg13x4/images/eu-consumer-guarantee/garan-label-filled-example.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=d9pqyMmulLMg13x4&q=85&s=803844b94fc471f27f60238cef4140af" alt="The official Commission GARAN durability label, filled in with example years, brand and model." width="808" height="850" data-path="images/eu-consumer-guarantee/garan-label-filled-example.png" />
</Frame>

### GARAN file requirements (PNG)

For each relevant product, prepare a finished **GARAN** PNG that:

* GARAN label should be a **color PNG**
* **Physical size:** at least **95 × 100 mm**
* **Image resolution:** at least **300 DPI**, which at that minimum size means at least **1122 × 1181 pixels**. Do not supply a smaller pixel canvas and scale it up
* **Keep the official GARAN artwork unchanged:** no distortion, cropping that changes layout, colour shifts, or change of proportions
* **Keep the QR code unchanged** (content, module pattern, quiet zone). At \~25 × 25 mm and 300 DPI the QR area is about **295 × 295 pixels**
* **QR encoding:** at least **4 pixels per module** so it stays scannable. The sample GARAN (QR Version 5) is about 6 px/module; 300 DPI at 95 × 100 mm is intended for QR Version 9 or lower
* The **QR code must remain scannable** in normal lighting with a standard phone camera

## Before you begin — checklist

| Check | Detail |
| - | - |
| GE sends confirmation email? | Required for this GE feature. **Not applicable for Shopify** — Shopify sends confirmation. |
| Harmonised notice | **Email attachment:** on by default from **27 September 2026** — no action unless you want to **disable** harmonised notice attachment (contact CSM). |
| GARAN file format | PNG only. Global-e downloads the file from your provided URL, converts it to PDF, and attaches the PDF in the email. |
| Official artwork | Use the **official Commission GARAN** artwork for each product (years · brand · model on the label). Do not redesign. |
| Harmonised notice (website and TOS) | **Website:** you remain responsible for prominent placement — we **highly recommend** this even though Global-e will add a link to the harmonised notice on **Terms of Sale (TOS)** for all platforms (inc. Shopify). |

## Step 1 — Default email behaviour and GARAN

### Harmonised notice (default)

From **27 September 2026**, Global-e **automatically attaches** the official English harmonised notice (PDF) on every qualifying GE-sent EEA goods confirmation email (EEA by shipping address).

**Disable:** contact your **Customer Success Manager (CSM)** if you wish to disable harmonised notice attachment on your confirmation emails. This does **not** remove the harmonised notice link from **Terms of Sale (TOS)**.

### GARAN (merchant-supplied)

**Enable:** GARAN attachment is **not enabled by default**. Contact your **Customer Success Manager (CSM)** to enable GARAN attachment on your confirmation emails.

**GARAN will be sent for a line item only when** GARAN attachment is enabled for your account and Global-e has received a valid `GaranImageURL` (PNG) for that product. We download the file, convert it to PDF, and attach it to the confirmation email. Line items without a valid URL are sent without a GARAN attachment for that product only. The harmonised notice is still attached on that email unless harmonised notice attachment is disabled for your account.

## Step 2 — Supply GARAN image URLs per relevant product

You can provide `GaranImageURL` using one of the following methods:

| Method | When to use | Field |
| - | - | - |
| **A - Catalog** | Product master data is synced to Global-e catalog / products table | `GaranImageURL` on the product |
| **B - SendCart** | Attributes are passed on each cart / order | `SendCartData.Products[].GaranImageURL` per line item |

Choose the method that fits your integration.

### GARAN URL requirements

| Requirement | Detail |
| - | - |
| **URL** | Publicly reachable HTTPS URL to the finished GARAN image for that product |
| **File type** | **PNG only** — see [GARAN file requirements (PNG)](/eu-consumer-guarantee-notice-and-garan#garan-file-requirements-png) |
| **Content** | Official Commission GARAN label, filled for that product (years, brand/trademark, model). Design preserved; QR scannable |
| **GE behaviour** | Global-e downloads the PNG at email send time, converts to **PDF**, and attaches the PDF to the confirmation email |
| **No URL for this line item** | That line item is sent **without** a GARAN attachment. Other line items with a valid URL still receive GARAN. The harmonised notice is still sent **unless you requested to disable this capability** for your account |

## Section A - Catalog: `GaranImageURL`

**Applies to:** Merchants who maintain product data in Global-e catalog (or products table) and want GARAN resolved **by SKU** at email send time.

### What to add

Add a product-level attribute:

| Attribute | Type | Description |
| - | - | - |
| `GaranImageURL` | URL (string) | Link to the **PNG** file of the official GARAN label for this product |

Set `GaranImageURL` only on **relevant products** (free producer commercial guarantee of durability > 2 years, whole product).

## Section B - SendCart: `SendCartData.Products[].GaranImageURL`

**Applies to:** Merchants / integrators who pass product attributes on the cart for each order.

### What to add

For each **qualifying line item** in the SendCart payload, populate:

```
SendCartData.Products[].GaranImageURL
```

| Field | Type | Description |
| - | - | - |
| `GaranImageURL` | URL (string) | Link to the **PNG** file of the official GARAN label for this line item / product |

Omit the field (or send empty) for line items that do not qualify. Global-e will not attach GARAN for those items.

## Platform-specific instructions

**Applies to:** Merchants using **Section A (Catalog)** or **Section B (SendCart)** who need platform-specific setup guidance.

## Shopify merchants

**Shopify merchants:** Global-e does **not** send Shopify order confirmation emails — Shopify does. **Step 1**, **Step 2**, and **Sections A–B** above apply only where **Global-e sends** the confirmation email. If you are on Shopify, follow this section instead.

### What Global-e does for Shopify

| What | Who |
| - | - |
| Link to harmonised notice in **Terms of Sale (TOS)** | **Global-e** — will add a link to the harmonised notice on Terms of Sale (TOS) for all platforms (inc. Shopify) |
| Harmonised notice + GARAN in **Shopify** order confirmation email | **Merchant** — see [Shopify implementation guide](/eu-consumer-guarantee-setup-shopify) below |
| Harmonised notice on **website** (prominent reminder) | **Merchant** — we **highly recommend** prominent on-site placement |
| Create **GARAN PNG** per relevant product | **Merchant** — see [GARAN file requirements (PNG)](/eu-consumer-guarantee-notice-and-garan#garan-file-requirements-png) |
| **GARAN** on your website before purchase (for example on the **product page / PDP**) where the product qualifies | **Merchant** |

## Your storefront obligations (not configured in this guide)

Even when Global-e handles confirmation emails, **you** remain responsible for:

1. Displaying the official **harmonised legal guarantee notice** prominently on your EEA-facing website. Regulatory wording (Directive 2024/825, Recital 28): *in cases of online sale, placed as a general reminder on the website of the trader selling goods.*

   Global-e will add a link to the harmonised notice on **Terms of Sale (TOS)** for all platforms (inc. Shopify). The TOS link supports compliance but **does not replace** prominent on-site placement — we **highly recommend** you still display the notice prominently on your storefront. **Shopify merchants:** see [**Shopify merchants**](/eu-consumer-guarantee-notice-and-garan#shopify-merchants) for full implementation guidance.
2. Showing the **GARAN label** for each qualifying product **before purchase** (for example on the product page / PDP), where applicable.

## Testing checklist

Run at least one end-to-end test on a sandbox or low-volume EEA market **after** GARAN data setup:

| Check | Done |
| - | - |
| Harmonised notice on test EEA order **without** merchant disable action | ☐ |
| Disable test (if applicable): notice **not** attached after CSM disables harmonised notice attachment | ☐ |
| Test order: **EEA shipping address**, goods, **GE sends** confirmation email | ☐ |
| Confirmation email includes **harmonised notice** attachment (PDF) | ☐ |
| Qualifying line item with valid `GaranImageURL` (PNG): **GARAN** attached as PDF | ☐ |
| Line item **without** `GaranImageURL`: **no** GARAN; notice still present | ☐ |
| Non-EEA shipping address: notice/GARAN behaviour matches expectation (no EEA obligation) | ☐ |
| GARAN URL returns valid **PNG** (not JPG/SVG/PDF at source URL) | ☐ |

## Frequently asked questions

### About the regulation

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="What is ECGT?">
    Directive (EU) 2024/825, "Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition" — also called EmpCo. It is an amending directive: it does not stand alone, it rewrites parts of two existing pillars of EU consumer law, the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive (UCPD) and the Consumer Rights Directive (CRD).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What is it trying to do?">
    Two things. First, stamp out greenwashing by banning a list of environmental claims outright. Second, make sure shoppers are told, before they buy, about the guarantee that applies to the goods, how long the product is expected to last, and whether it can be repaired.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Which merchants are affected?">
    Any trader selling goods to consumers in the EEA (EU + Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does it apply to merchants based outside the EU?">
    Yes. The test is whether commercial activity is directed at EEA consumers, not where the seller is established.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What is the legal guarantee notice?">
    A standardised notice, designed by the Commission, reminding shoppers that they have a minimum two-year legal guarantee if goods turn out to be defective. It applies to all goods sold to EEA consumers. It is a general reminder, not a per-product element.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What is the GARAN label?">
    A standardised label shown where the producer offers a commercial guarantee of durability that covers the whole product, at no extra cost, for more than two years — and has actually given that information to us. All four conditions must be met. It shows the guarantee duration alongside a reminder of the legal guarantee.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does showing one replace the other?">
    No, as they cover different rights: the notice is about the statutory guarantee for defective goods, the GARAN label is about a voluntary producer guarantee on how long the product lasts. Where both apply, both are shown.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does this regulation require me to start offering new guarantees on my products?">
    No. The regulation is about **informing** shoppers about rights and commitments that already apply — not creating new ones. The **harmonised notice** reminds shoppers of the **statutory legal guarantee** that already exists for all goods sold to EEA consumers. **GARAN** applies only where the **producer** has already chosen to offer a **free commercial durability guarantee** covering the whole product for **more than two years**, and has given you that information. If you do not have such a producer guarantee on a product today, you are not being asked to invent one.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What do the harmonised notice and GARAN cover — and how are they different?">
    The **harmonised notice** relates to the **legal guarantee of conformity**: goods must not be faulty, unsafe, or unfit for normal use **when delivered** — including manufacturing faults, mismatch with description, and defects that existed at delivery even if they appear later. It does **not** cover wear and tear, accidental damage, or misuse after delivery. It is **not** a separate right to return goods or a promise of how long a product will last in ordinary use.

    **GARAN** reflects a **voluntary producer durability guarantee** beyond the two-year legal minimum: the product should **keep working as intended** for the stated period. The same exclusions apply (wear and tear, accidental damage, misuse). It does **not** apply by default to every sale — only where the producer has already disclosed such a commitment. In practice, GARAN is likely to be **more common** for long-life or luxury products (for example watches) and **less common** for categories such as apparel. If a product does not qualify, you do not need to supply GARAN data for it.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Who produces the artwork?">
    The Commission publishes both designs, in colour and black-and-white, under Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 — use the colour version for online display. For the GARAN label, only three fields may be changed — guarantee duration, brand or producer, and model. Everything else, including the multilingual strip along the bottom, stays exactly as issued and must not be cropped.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does it need translating for each market?">
    No. The GARAN label already carries a multilingual strip covering all EU official languages. For the notice, one official language version — the Commission's English file — is acceptable across every market.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Where does the legal guarantee notice go?">
    Prominently somewhere on the storefront — a dedicated information section, a footer link, or a banner. It is a website-level reminder, not a checkout step, and it must be readable on both desktop and mobile.

    Global-e will add a link to the harmonised notice in **Terms of Sale (TOS)** including Shopify's. We **highly recommend** you still display the notice prominently on your storefront.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Where does the GARAN label appear?">
    On your website before purchase — for example on the product page or product catalogue. It will also be provided to the shopper upon purchase, as part of the confirmation email.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What about the order confirmation email?">
    Where Global-e sends the confirmation email: the harmonised notice is attached by default from 27 September 2026 (unless harmonised notice attachment is disabled for your account). GARAN is attached for qualifying products when GARAN attachment is enabled and you supply `GaranImageURL`. Where both apply, both are provided on a durable medium — attached PDF. **Shopify merchants:** see [**Shopify merchants**](/eu-consumer-guarantee-notice-and-garan#shopify-merchants) — Global-e will add a link to the harmonised notice on **Terms of Sale (TOS)** for all platforms (inc. Shopify); you implement notice and GARAN on your website (for example PDP) and Shopify confirmation email per the [Shopify implementation guide](/eu-consumer-guarantee-setup-shopify).
  </Accordion>
</AccordionGroup>

### Global-e setup and behaviour

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Is the data a one-time thing?">
    No. Guarantee terms, models and catalogues change. Merchants should refresh what they have given us when and if their range changes.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I disable harmonised notice attachment on confirmation emails?">
    Yes. The harmonised notice is **on by default** from 27 September 2026 on qualifying GE-sent EEA emails. Contact your CSM to disable harmonised notice attachment. This does **not** remove the harmonised notice link from **Terms of Sale (TOS)**.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="When does the regulation start?">
    The regulation applies from **27 September 2026**. From that date, Global-e attaches the harmonised notice by default on qualifying GE-sent EEA confirmation emails unless harmonised notice attachment is disabled for your account. GARAN is sent per line item once GARAN attachment is **enabled** for your account (via CSM) and you provide a valid `GaranImageURL` (PNG) via Catalog or SendCart.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What if I do not send GaranImageURL for some products?">
    For each line item, if GARAN attachment is enabled and we have a valid `GaranImageURL`, we attach the GARAN; products without a URL are sent without a GARAN attachment for that item. Other qualifying items on the same order are unaffected. The harmonised notice is still attached on every qualifying email unless harmonised notice attachment is disabled for your account.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I use a JPG or PDF URL instead of PNG?">
    No. `GaranImageURL` must point to a PNG file. Global-e converts it to PDF for the email attachment.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Do I need both Catalog and SendCart?">
    No. Use any method - Catalog or SendCart, whichever fits how you pass product data to Global-e.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does Global-e generate the GARAN artwork for me?">
    No. You must create the GARAN, and host the finished official GARAN PNG at the URL you provide.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What about Shopify?">
    Global-e does not send Shopify order confirmation emails.

    Global-e will add a link to the harmonised notice on **Terms of Sale (TOS)** for all platforms (inc. Shopify).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does the order confirmation email change in any way?">
    No. Global-e does not change your existing confirmation email — not the body text, layout, or product line items. We only attach files: the harmonised notice (by default, unless harmonised notice attachment is disabled for your account) and qualifying GARAN labels when GARAN attachment is enabled (converted to PDF). Nothing else in the email changes.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Will guarantee years appear in the email body under each product?">
    No. Years appear only on the GARAN attachment you supply - not as separate text in the email body.

## Legal disclaimer

This guide explains how Global-e attaches the official EU harmonised notice (by default on qualifying GE-sent emails from 27 September 2026, unless harmonised notice attachment is disabled for your account) and qualifying GARAN labels (when GARAN attachment is enabled and you supply `GaranImageURL`) as a **durable medium**. It is **not legal advice**. Directive (EU) 2024/825 and Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 apply across EU member states; you remain the trader of record for your storefront, product pages, and any confirmation emails **not** sent by Global-e. Review your setup with your own legal counsel before go-live (**27 September 2026**).
